
Overview
One of the most common services we provide is electrical panel upgrades. In most cases, homeowners discover that their existing electrical service no longer meets their power needs, particularly in older homes. While new homes are typically built with a 200-amp service, even that may not be sufficient if the service supplies multiple buildings or significant electrical loads.
In other cases, the upgrade is necessary because the existing panel has deteriorated. Common signs include flickering lights, frequently tripping breakers, or other intermittent electrical issues. These problems are often caused by moisture entering the panel, which can lead to corrosion and oxidation of the bus bars over time.
A panel upgrade is also an excellent opportunity to consolidate multiple subpanels into a single, properly sized main panel, improving both capacity and organization.
Planning the Upgrade
The first step is determining your electrical requirements. We calculate your anticipated load, verify that the service conductors from BC Hydro’s transformer are adequately sized, and assess the best location for the new overhead mast or underground service entrance.
The Canadian Electrical Code has specific requirements governing service placement and installation. Depending on the scope of the project, we may also need to coordinate with BC Hydro’s Design Department before work can begin.
Once the assessment is complete, we provide a detailed estimate outlining the expected cost and project timeline.
As the property owner, you will need to authorize BC Hydro to complete the required service changes. Quality Electric requires a deposit equal to the cost of materials and permits before scheduling the work.
Installation Process
Whenever possible, we complete as much work as we can before the scheduled service change. This typically includes installing the new mast, meter base, panel, and grounding system.
On the day of the service transfer, BC Hydro disconnects the existing electrical service and connects the new one. Because the new equipment is already in place, we can quickly transfer your existing circuits to the new panel. This approach minimizes the time your power is disconnected and allows most panel upgrades to be completed in a single day.
We also coordinate with the electrical inspector to complete the required rough-in and final inspections.

What to Expect
The installation begins by mounting a new service mast to your building. This usually requires drilling through the roof overhang and, in some cases, opening an interior wall to install structural backing capable of supporting the mast and incoming service conductors.
Please note: We do not do drywall repairs, the homeowner will have to hire the appropriate trade to complete repairs.
A new meter base is then installed at the bottom of the mast. Most modern meter bases include an integrated service disconnect, which is now required in many situations but is considerably more expensive than older designs.
Next, we install the grounding system. From this point onward, all downstream grounding connections function as bonding conductors in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code.
We then install conduit through the exterior wall to carry the service conductors from the meter base to the new electrical panel. Every penetration through your home’s exterior is carefully sealed to prevent moisture and insect entry.
Once the new service equipment is in place, we transfer each existing circuit to the new panel, extending wiring where necessary. New circuit breakers are installed to meet current code requirements, and we inspect the connected wiring and devices to ensure they comply with current safety standards wherever applicable.
Finally, every breaker is clearly labeled so each circuit can be easily identified for future maintenance or troubleshooting.
