The main distinction is the orientation of the rotor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Horizontal-Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs)<\/strong><br><img decoding=\"async\" work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rotor spins around a horizontal shaft.<br>The turbine faces into the wind, often using a yaw system that rotates the nacelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Highest efficiency of all wind turbine designs.<br>Mature, proven technology.<br>Well suited for large-scale electricity generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disadvantages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Requires a tall tower.<br>More complex installation and maintenance.<br>Performance drops in turbulent wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typical applications:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Utility-scale wind farms<br>Farms and ranches<br>Large commercial installations<br>Residential systems in open, windy areas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They come in several designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darrieus (&#8220;Eggbeater&#8221;) Turbine<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curved blades form a shape similar to an eggbeater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pros<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good efficiency for a VAWT.<br>Doesn&#8217;t need to turn toward the wind.<br>Generator can be located near the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cons<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually cannot self-start.<br>Higher mechanical stresses.<br>More difficult to manufacture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Best for<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research<br>Small commercial applications<br>Areas with changing wind direction<br>H-Rotor (Straight-Bladed Darrieus)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uses straight vertical blades instead of curved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pros<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Easier to build.<br>Better structural strength.<br>Lower manufacturing cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typical characteristics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rotor diameter: 100\u2013250 m<br>Hub height: 80\u2013170 m<br>Power rating: 2\u201315+ MW (offshore models can be even larger)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These produce electricity for the grid rather than individual buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Specialized designs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Engineers have also developed less common concepts, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Multi-rotor turbines<\/strong> \u2013 Several smaller rotors mounted on one structure instead of a single very large rotor.<br><br><strong>Diffuser-augmented turbines<\/strong> \u2013 A shroud or duct increases airflow through the rotor to boost output.<br><br><strong>Airborne wind energy systems <\/strong>\u2013 Kites or tethered drones capture stronger winds at higher altitudes; these remain largely experimental.<br><br><strong>Helical-blade VAWTs <\/strong>\u2013 Twisted vertical blades reduce vibration and provide smoother rotation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p Vertical-axis turbines are attractive where winds are turbulent or frequently change direction, such as in urban environments, but they generally produce less electricity for a given swept area.
